Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing)
Weight loss seems to be an endless struggle and if you’re like most people, the hardest part is trying to get rid of those small amounts of body fat that just won’t respond to regular diet and exercise. Love handles, back rolls, flabby upper arms and stubborn fat deposits in the inner and outer thighs are just some of the areas that can be the most difficult to address with natural weight loss methods.
Now there is an answer for those hard to treat areas: Cryolipolysis. Otherwise known as “fat freezing” or "CRYO" is a revolutionary procedure that uses cold to help break down fat deposits without the use of invasive methods such as liposuction. Better still, because Cryolipolysis targets fat, it won’t damage other tissues so it is quick, safe and effective and no downtime.
What does the procedure entail?
Cryolipolysis is a pretty straightforward procedure. A gel pad is applied to the treatment area to protect the skin and then an applicator is used to suction the fatty bulge. The fat layer is then cooled to between -5 and -10 degrees. It can take as long as an hour to fully treat an area, then the applicator is removed and the treatment area may be massaged for 2-3 minutes to help further stimulate the breakdown of fat cells.
How soon can I expect to see results?
Results will not be immediate as it takes some time for the fat cells to break down completely. Some patients may notice results in as little as three weeks, but in most cases it takes anywhere from two to four months to notice visible changes.
Advantages of Cryo
While it is not a weight loss solution, there are some distinct advantages to this procedure, including:
· It is non-invasive, so it doesn’t require cutting into the skin and is therefore very low risk.
· The cold works as its own numbing agent, so there is no need for anaesthetic.
· There is no downtime – you can resume your regular activities immediately after treatment.
· More than one area of the body can be treated in a single session, making it easier on the patient.
· The procedure is safe for people of all ages
· Fat cells that are destroyed during the treatment are permanently removed from the body.
· There is no damage to other cells, blood vessels, nerve fibres, muscles or skin.
Who is the ideal candidate for Cryo?
This procedure is intended for spot treatment of problem areas, therefore the best candidates are people in good general health with no serious underlying issues who are looking for a way to target small, trouble spots that don’t respond to other weight loss methods.
Is there anyone who isn’t suitable for Cryo?
Cryolipolysis is not recommended for individuals who are seriously overweight or clinically obese. It should also not be performed on any areas of the skin that are cut or injured or on individuals with varicose veins, dermatitis or other skin conditions. It is not recommended for anyone with extreme cold sensitivity or medical conditions that respond adversely to cold such as Reynaud’s Syndrome. Individuals with diabetic neuropathy, inflammatory skin disorders or pregnant women are also not good candidates. if you suffer from cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. As with any medical procedure, ask your practicioner if Cryo procedure is right for you.
Are there any side effects?
Some individuals may experience temporary pains, aches, redness, tingling of the skin, swelling, skin discolouration or sensitivity, but these should last no more than a few hours and should not be severe enough to require downtime.
How many treatment sessions are required?
The number of sessions depends on the size of the area being treated and how your body responds to treatment. Most patients require 2-3 sessions, but some problem areas may require follow up sessions. Your Practicioner will customise a treatment to your specific needs and goals.
To ensure you support your body to achieve the best results possible you are advised to follow our aftercare advice.
Maintain your weight
Eat a healthy diet low in carbs and sugar
Drink at least 2.5 -3 litres of water/fluid each day to support your lymphatic system
Reduce your intake of caffeine to no more than 2 cups a day
Reduce your alcohol intake to 1 or 2 drinks per week
Physical activity or exercise is beneficial on all levels for overall health and weight management. Regular exercise also supports your lymphatic system as the pumping action of your muscles created during movement and activity supports the lymphatic circulation.
How does Fat freezing work?
Scientific findings have determined that fat cells are more susceptible to cold than other types of cells in the body. During the treatment, when cold is applied, it crystallises the fat cells and triggers an inflammatory response within the body that ultimately destroys these cells causing them to die. Your body naturally removes the dead cells through its normal elimination process via the lymphatic system.
We always recommend you allow 8 weeks to see your results; results can continue to improve for up to 12 weeks following your treatment. However, we have some clients who start to see results appearing from as early as 6 weeks.*

FAT FREEZING FAQS
What is Fat Freezing?
Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing) is the controlled freezing of fat cells to cause apoptosis, which is the destruction of the fat cell. When fat cells are exposed to temperatures between -1°C and -10°C they undergo crystallisation. This process produces an inflammatory response which causes the fat cell to shrink and then die. Structures such as skin tissue, blood vessels, and our nervous system, however, are not as sensitive to cold temperatures and are therefore totally unaffected by the treatment. Following Fat Freezing treatments, the body removes the destroyed fat cells in the normal way, via the lymphatic system. They are then naturally eliminated from your body.
Can anyone have Fat Freezing?
Does the treatment hurt?
Our fat freezing treatments are non-invasive and painless. However, Fat Freezing is a unique treatment that creates a few strange sensations. Initially you will feel the suction as the fat tissue is drawn upwards into the device. Then, as the fat tissue begins to freeze, the area will feel cold and you may experience a tingling sensation. These sensations disappear after 10 – 12 minutes, allowing you to relax for the duration of the treatment. Once the device has been removed the treated area will feel ice cold and numb. However, your body will quickly heat up the area and the numbness will disappear soon after.
What are the side effects?
Fat Freezing is a completely safe and effective treatment for fat reduction. However, following your treatment you may experience the following side effects:
How quickly will I see results?
Following a fat freeze procedure, time frames for seeing results can vary among individuals. Results could start to appear after 6 weeks, however, we normally advise that best results are achieved around 12 weeks. Remember that nothing changes over night. You must stick to our aftercare advice and give your results time.
How many fat freeze treatments will I need?
The number of fat freezing treatments you'll need will depend on the initial size of the pocket to be treated, your individual goals and the results observed following each session. As a rule of thumb, we normally recommend between 1 and 3 treatments per area. If you are looking to further reduce the area after your initial treatment then we would be able to perform a second Fat Freezing treatment after 4 weeks. Alternatively you can combine your Cryolipolysis treatments with one of our other treatments such as a course of Radiofrequency for enhanced results.
How long do Fat Freezing results last for?
What happens during the treatment?
First, your therapist will take some before photos and mark up the area(s) you wish to treat. She will then position you on the treatment table make sure you are completely comfortable prior to the treatment. A protective gel membrane is then placed onto the area and the device is attached. Suction holds the device in place. You will feel the area go cold and then it will go numb as the treatment is completed. During the treatment you can relax. Once the treatment has finished we will massage the area.
